What Are Web3 Points? Do Points Turn Into Tokens?
Many projects track participation with points or XP, and communities often assume points will become tokens. But points are a project's own bookkeeping: whether they convert, into what and at what rate is entirely up to the project's rules. Using official statements from projects in our directory, this guide explains what points are and how to judge whether a program is worth your time.

What points are
Points, XP and similar scores are what a project records in its own system for things you do: checking in, completing quests, trading, staying online. They usually cannot be transferred and have no market price; their value depends entirely on what the project later does with them.
So the first question for any points program is whether the official rules say what the points convert into.
Same word, very different outcomes
Projects in our directory show several different outcomes (each per its official statements):
| Project | Points or record | What the official source says |
|---|---|---|
| Grass | Network Points and other points | Stage 2 rewards are paid entirely in USDC, converted from points; no new GRASS tokens are issued for it |
| MetaMask Rewards | Campaign points and rewards | Season 1 has ended; MetaMask states Rewards is not the same as $MASK and there are no current plans for a $MASK token |
| Abstract | XP and badges | The Portal docs do not say XP converts into tokens or cash |
| Galxe | GG from quests | Not every quest offers GG, and only quests with a claim fee can award it |
| Layer3 | CUBE credentials and L3 rebates | A CUBE records a completed quest; minting a CUBE can earn L3 at your Liquid Reward Rate |
In other words, points may convert into a stablecoin (Grass), correspond to a platform-token rebate (Layer3), or come with no conversion promise at all (Abstract XP, and MetaMask Rewards in relation to $MASK).
Judging whether a points program is worth it
- Do the official rules state a conversion? If not, assume the points may never pay out and size your effort accordingly.
- Snapshot and eligibility: when counting stops, what conditions apply and which regions are excluded. With Grass, an account that only earned uptime points and no Network Points during the eligibility period was outside the Stage 2 claim.
- What you put in: time, fees, claim fees and locked-up funds. Some published MetaMask campaigns are trading competitions that require capital and rank participants by returns.
- Whether the rules change: seasons end and rules get revised; an old season's rules do not carry over to a new campaign.
Common traps
- Multiple accounts, bought or farmed points: many programs explicitly ban multi-accounting and point farming, and a flagged account can be voided entirely. See what a Sybil address is and why DePIN node accounts get banned.
- "Points redemption" phishing pages: any redemption or claim page that asks you to connect, sign or pay first should be checked against the official site; see how to spot fake airdrop claim sites.
- Estimating returns from points: until a project publishes a conversion rate, any "each point is worth X" claim is a guess.
