Testnets, Points and Airdrop Participation

Three questions are worth answering before you join anything: how much time it takes, whether it ties up money, and whether the reward is written down anywhere official.

What counts as a participation opportunity

Testnet tasks, points programmes, community quests and airdrops get discussed together, but their cost structures have almost nothing in common. A testnet usually costs time and test tokens. A points programme may require staying online or holding an asset. Community quests lean on content and referrals. An airdrop is an outcome, not a way of participating. Sorting the type first tells you what you should actually be comparing.

Work out the cost before looking at the reward

There are three kinds of cost: time, transaction fees, and capital that sits idle. Time is the one people underestimate most — anything requiring a daily check-in or continuous uptime costs far more than a one-off task. Fees accumulate on mainnet, especially across repeated approvals and bridge hops. Tied-up capital carries an opportunity cost that almost nobody puts in the calculation.

Is the reward rule official

"Points will convert to tokens" is, in most projects, a community expectation rather than a commitment. There is really only one test: does an official announcement or document say so. If it does not, price your participation as though the points may never convert. Even where rules are published, check the snapshot timing, the eligibility threshold and the distribution method — if any one of them does not match, your activity may not count.

Where losses actually happen

Fake campaign pages and fake claim portals are the most common source of loss, and they appear exactly when a campaign is busiest. Verifying the domain before connecting, using a separate low-value wallet, and reviewing and revoking approvals once a campaign ends will block most of it. The guides below go through specific projects and specific steps.
